A diagnostic wax up is critical for smile designs, full mouth rehabs and all cosmetic dentistry cases. The diagnostic wax up will be used both as a blue print for the case cosmetically and functionally as well as a visual aid preoperative for the patient. The three types are Hand-Waxed, Digital, and Additive-Only.
A hand waxed diagnostic wax up is done by reducing or prepping the teeth that will be treated on the model and then adding wax to the proper form and function. Some doctors prefer hand waxed over digital because of the ability to better control small details.
A digital diagnostic wax up is done by digitally removing or prepping the teeth that will be treated and then replacing them with designs that fit and function properly in the patients mouth.
An additive only wax up works for only certain cases. If a patient has lingual reclined teeth, severe wear, missing teeth or needs to be opened vertically they may be a candidate for the additive only technique.
The diagnostic prep kit is designed off of the wax up and is used as a step by step guide for the clinician. It guides the doctor in achieving the optimal prep reduction to attain the desired outcome.
